Hello,

The Winter Olympics start in less than a month, and we plan to make the most of the increased attention on our sport! Over the next month, Cedar Rapids Curling will start showing up on billboards along Blairs Ferry Road and Collins Road, posters in Iowa City buses, banners inside ImOn Ice Arena, social media advertising, and more.

We also will be hosting media outlets during league and learn-to-curl events, starting with NBC affiliates KWQC tonight and KWWL on Jan. 27. Be loud and have fun for the cameras!

We have SO MUCH going on in the next month, including a Olympic curling watch party co-hosted by Cedar Rapids Curling and Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City! Read on and learn how you can join in all the fun and help grow our sport!

Let's watch Olympic curling together

Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City is welcoming us to watch Olympic curling on their giant screen!

Join us at noon Sunday, Feb. 15, to watch the USA men's team take on Norway. Spread the word and bring your family and friends!

We will have floor curling going on for you and others to play, and we will be answering questions and talking about how people can try curling on actual ice.

Help spread the word of upcoming events

We need your help promoting our Olympic season learn-to-curl events and mini-camps. We'd love it if you'd share the fun with friends on your social media channels. Feel free to steal the below image if that helps!

Help with keg curling!

House Divided Brewery, owned by curler Cal Corrin, is hosting a keg curling activity during a period break of the 6 p.m. Feb. 7 RoughRiders game. He needs our help facilitating the activity. Cedar Rapids Curling also will staff a table in the concourse marketing the club's upcoming learn-to-curl events. Register and come on out. It should be fun!

The first six people to sign up to volunteer will get in free, and we will have a discount code for any others who sign up.

Help high schoolers learn physics through curling

A group of Iowa City West High students will be using curling to learn physics concepts from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at the arena.

We are looking for volunteers to help set up and assist. There will be two groups of students coming in and we will provide a 30-minutes lesson for each group. Then, they will conduct experiements of their own design, during which we'll just help if needed.

We're really excited about this partnership and hope you all can help us make it a great event!

Help us teach new curlers during the Olympic rush

We will host multiple large-scale learn-to-curl events during and shortly after the Winter Olympics. And if we get the number of participants we have seen in the past during the Olympics, we will need all the volunteers we can get!

Don't forget, members who volunteer at six events during the 2025-26 season will be exempt from a league fee increase for the 2026-27 season. To be counted as a volunteer at an event, you MUST sign up to volunteer on the website prior to the event.

A message from the board: Curling is for everyone

This fall, USA Curling informed its member clubs that it has revised its Transgender Participation Policy in response to a mandate from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

Cedar Rapids Curling stands in full support of our transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming curlers. We remain committed to upholding the Spirit of Curling and our club’s core values, which includes being welcoming to all individuals regardless of age, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, or ability.

Despite changes at national and international competitions, Cedar Rapids Curling will continue to remain open and encouraging to all individuals during our learn-to-curl events, leagues, and bonspiels. Discrimination or harassment toward any members or guests will not be tolerated.

Sincerely,

Cedar Rapids Curling Board

Congratulations to our nationals team!

Cale Tesch, Parker Abbott, Mac Marple, and Greg Schmitt competed last week at the 2025 U.S. Arena National Championship in Las Vegas.

We know that the week didn't go exactly like they hoped, but we are proud of how they represented Cedar Rapids Curling and the Midwest Curling Association!

Thank you for making Curl Jam a massive success

We are pleased to announce that the second annual Curl Jam raised $12,000 for Arc of East Central Iowa! We had a blast teaching community members from local businesses how to curl and then leading them through a mini-bonspiel, all while raising money for a great cause. We couldn't have done this without financial support from Simmons Perrine Law that allowed ALL funds raised to go to the Arc. We can't wait for next year!

Hello,

Welcome to the 2025-25 curling season! It's going to be a great one!

There is lots of news to start the season, so don't stop reading!

Thank you, outgoing board members; welcome to our new members!

We would like to thank Lynn Benkusky and David Sibert for their years on the Cedar Rapids Curling Board of Directors! They both brought wonderful ideas and we are better because of them. David has sadly moved but you'll see Lynn as league, so make sure you thank her for her service to Cedar Rapids Curling.

We would like to welcome Parker Abbott and Jay Cousin, who were elected to two-year terms. We can't wait to work with them in their new roles.

We are also proud to announce that Phil Burian has been elected to another year as president of the board. Cedar Rapids Curling is lucky to have Phil!

The Cedar Rapids Curling Board wants to be as accessible to its members as possible. Don't know who your board members are? Find short bios and photos of board members on the Cedar Rapids Curling website.

 Meet your board

Have an idea or want to reach out to the board? You can reach all the board members at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Meet your Cedar Rapids Curling team competing at National Championships

Cale Tesch, Parker Abbott, Mac Marple, and Greg Schmitt will compete Oct. 14-19 at the 2025 U.S. Arena National Championship in Las Vegas. They will be representing Cedar Rapids Curling and the Midwest Curling Association.

Make sure to wish them good curling!

If we hear that games will be livestreamed, we'll try to let members know.

Fall league update

Due to a lower number of teams than expected for our fall league, we will now end league on Dec. 2 and teams will have one bye.

We will still be off Nov. 18 for Thanksgiving week.

Help us make Curl Jam a success

We are hosting a fundraising event from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 3 for the Arc of East Central Iowa. Businesses will make a large donation to the Arc in order to enter teams for a short learn-to-curl followed by a minispiel with three two-end games.

This event was a huge success last year and it was a lot of fun.

Taking time off work is a big ask, but we have a sponsor for the ice rental, so 100% of the money raised will go to the Arc.

Also, maybe your employer wants to enter a team?

Start getting in your volunteer hours

As was announced this summer, the Cedar Rapids Curling Board decided that members who volunteer at six events during the upcoming 2025-26 season will be exempt from a league fee increase the following 2026-27 season.

To be counted as a volunteer at an event, you MUST sign up to volunteer on the website prior to the event. Some longer events will count as multiple events. We will indicate this on the sign-up page.

If you volunteered at a summer event, such as CedarSpiel and the farmers' market, that will be counted.

We hope to get a system up and running soon where you can see how many events you have volunteered at. We will let you know when we do.

If your team is on a bye on one of the learn-to-curl nights or during instructional league, we ask that you discuss with your team if one or two of you would be willing to volunteer that night. Don't forget to sign up!

  • Learn to Curls (during league): Sept. 30, Oct. 14 (potentially Oct. 7 and Oct. 21 if there is interest)
  • Curl Jam: 11 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Oct. 3
  • Instructional league: Oct. 28–Nov. 18

We will host multiple large-scale learn-to-curl events in the winter to coincide with the Winter Olympics. And if we get the number of participants we have seen in the past during the Olympics, we will need all the volunteers we can get!

Join us for broomstacking

One aspect of curling that is a large part of the sport is broomstacking. For those of you who may be newer, broomstacking is simply enjoying the company of your opponents after the game, usually with a cold beverage (but not required).

There are a number of Cedar Rapids Curling members who go to Union Station on 16th Avenue (two minutes from the arena) after league every week for food and drink.

We'd love to have some new faces join us and be able to get to know everyone better!

Brush up on all things CRC

(Almost) everything you want to know about Cedar Rapids Curling can be found in the member handbook. Our mission statement, board member, office positions, policies, etiquette, league rules--it's all there.

Need a new nametag?

Have you lost your name badge? Have a name change? The club is ordering official nametags for those needing one. They will be the standard black and white with our logo etched on them and have a magnetic closure in the back. The cost is $8 per tag. Email Kari Kozak (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) with your order by Sept. 26.
