COVID 19 update (2/27/22): Cedar Rapids Curling continues to take direction regarding COVID-19 policies from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Linn County Public Health (LCPH) professionals.

The CDC recommends indoor masking in counties with “high” risk of coronavirus transmission. Because Linn County currently is at “medium” risk, Cedar Rapids Curling is NOT requiring masks during Cedar Rapids Curling events.

We welcome anyone who feels more comfortable wearing a mask to continue wearing one, and we ask that anyone who is feeling ill to please stay home and consider getting tested.

We will continue to monitor the situation and will make adjustments to our policies as necessary. We appreciate your understanding and willingness to keep our curling and wider community safe and healthy.

What to expect

Your first week, we’ll start the session with a quick off-ice discussion about the basics of curling, safety, and etiquette.

We’ll start each session with drills aimed at improving various aspects of the game, including delivering a stone, sweeping, strategy, etc. The remaining time will be devoted to playing a short game. You will have the opportunity to play each position: lead, second, vice-skip, and skip.

Examples of weekly sessions include:

  • Week 1 – Sliding
  • Week 2 – Release & Line
  • Week 3 –  Weight & Line
  • Week 4 – Sweeping & Communication

Our instructors will be with you each step of the way and answer all your questions.

What to bring

Cedar Rapids Curling provides all the necessary curling equipment, but you will be on ice and the air temperature usually is in the 40s. Dress in warm, loose-fitting clothing (tight jeans will hinder movement). You may want to shed a layer once you start playing. Many participants are more comfortable wearing gloves or mittens and a hat.

Bring a separate pair of athletic shoes, whose soles are clean of any rocks, dirt, gum, grass, etc., to wear on the ice (no heels, open toed shoes, dress shoes, boots, slippers, loafers, or any footwear with a hard sole). Do not wear these shoes to the arena, as you they will pick up the previously mentioned rocks, dirt, gum, grass, etc. from the outside.

Don’t forget to bring a sense of humor!

Physical and age requirements

Cedar Rapids Curling will find a way for any interested person who can safely be on the ice to participate when their physical abilities do not allow for typical curling styles and techniques. We have special stone delivery devices for those who may not be able to comfortably crouch down to deliver (throw) stones and we can accommodate individuals with more significant physical limitations. Contact us with questions about your particular circumstances if you have concerns; we almost certainly will be able to accommodate.

Children must be at least 8 to participate unless given special permission by Cedar Rapids Curling. Children age 8-14 must be accompanied on the ice by an adult, with at least one adult for every three children. Anyone younger than 18 must have a legal parent or guardian sign a consent form. If a parent or legal guardian is not able to attend, please print and sign the Cedar Rapids Curling Waiver.

Cedar Rapids Curling generally has one 8- to 10-week league in the fall and winter/spring, with one or two introductory leagues held at the same time. We often have a 2- to 5-week league in between the longer leagues and in the late spring and summer.

Your annual membership is required for you to play in all leagues, except instructional league.

Register for upcoming leagues.

Types of Leagues

The following leagues are available at Cedar Rapids Curling:

Instructional League

These four-week leagues allow you to try curling and prepare you for league play if you decide to continue. No experience or equipment is necessary.

Learn more on the Instructional Leagues Page

Open League

These 8- to 10-week leagues are an open format, meaning your team can be all male, female, or any combination. You can sign up for leagues as a team of four or as an individual, in which case we will group you with others. Many of our members regularly sign up as individuals. It gives you the chance to play with new people each league!

Teams compete against each other in a hybrid round robin format with playdowns.

Luck of the Draw League

During these 4- to 5-week leagues, we will draw names out of a hat each week to decide which team you are on that week. This allows you to play with new people each week.
