What to expect

When you arrive, you will complete short paperwork and pay the instructional fee. We’ll start the session with a quick off-ice discussion about the basics of curling, safety, and etiquette. Then you’ll head onto the ice to learn how to throw and sweep the stone. Finally, we’ll put it all together by playing a short game. Don’t worry, our instructors will be with you all the way, discussing strategy and answering all your questions.

What to bring

Cedar Rapids Curling provides all the necessary curling equipment, but you will be on ice and the air temperature usually is in the 40s. Dress in warm, loose-fitting clothing (tight jeans will hinder movement). You may want to shed a layer once you start playing. Many participants are more comfortable wearing gloves or mittens and a hat.

Bring a separate pair of athletic shoes, whose soles are clean of any rocks, dirt, gum, grass, etc., to wear on the ice (no heels, open toed shoes, dress shoes, boots, slippers, loafers, or any footwear with a hard sole). Do not wear these shoes to the arena, as you they will pick up the previously mentioned rocks, dirt, gum, grass, etc. from the outside.

Don’t forget to bring a sense of humor!

Physical and age requirements

Cedar Rapids Curling will find a way for any interested person who can safely be on the ice to participate when their physical abilities do not allow for typical curling styles and techniques. We have special stone delivery devices for those who may not be able to comfortably crouch down to deliver (throw) stones and we can accommodate individuals with more significant physical limitations. Contact us with questions about your particular circumstances if you have concerns; we almost certainly will be able to accommodate.

Children must be at least 8 to participate unless given special permission by Cedar Rapids Curling. Children age 8-14 must be accompanied on the ice by an adult, with at least one adult for every three children. Anyone younger than 18 must have a legal parent or guardian sign a consent form. If a parent or legal guardian is not able to attend, please print and sign the Cedar Rapids Curling Waiver.

Friendlies are a chance for club members to go to a one-day event at a nearby club. It’s a time to enjoy a day of curling on dedicated ice and to make new friends.

These events are open to everyone, from beginner to advanced curler, and typically consists of two to three short games, each followed by broomstacking.

You can sign up as a team or as an individual and we will form a team for you.

Host clubs usually have basic sliders, stabilizers and brooms to borrow if you do not have your own, but check with a Cedar Rapids Curling officer if you have concerns.

 The cost varies by event.

Saturday, December 10, 2022 -

St. Louis, Waltham, and Cedar Rapids Curling Clubs are working together to create an All-American Event to help women curlers. This would be a one day event with pins provided by the USWCA. The plan currently has two teams from each of Cedar Rapids, St Louis, and our gracious hosts Waltham. The cost will be $20 to cover the ice, breakfast and lunch and beer. This event is aimed at women curlers. Our USWCA rep, Helen Bryce, is organizing this event and please let her know if you are interested in attending.

Waltham is "doable" in one day, as a drive there, curl, drive back. It would be super if we could fill both Cedar Rapids teams with female curlers. You don't need to have ever been to a bonspiel before or even been on dedicated ice before. It should be a fun day with some of our nearest curling neighbors!
