Hello,

Welcome to 2024! Winter league is about to get underway--one week late. Because we had to cancel the Jan. 9 Learn-to-Curl due to snow and there being very little ice availability, we decided to move the LTC to Jan. 16 and push winter league back one week. It will now start Jan.23 and end March 26. It will still be the same eight weeks of curling spread over 10 weeks with two byes to get all 11-12 teams on the ice.

The only other new thing regarding winter league is the introduction of the "no-tick rule." See a reminder about that down below.

And because you already planned to come Jan. 16, you should still show up and help with our Learn-to Curl event!

Want to play on Thursdays? Sign up NOW

We managed to wrangle a Thursday league time-slot at the arena this spring. But we still need enough people to sign up to pay for ice. Please sign up now if you plan to join the spring Thursday league. We want to know if this night will work sooner rather than later because we also have an instructional league planned for then and we don't want to cancel last minute on those folks.

And don't worry, if you can't play Thursday, we'll still have a Tuesday night spring league as well. Two nights of curling!

Spring Thursday league

Dates: Thursdays, March 28-May 9
Time: 6:45 pm - 9:15 pm
Cost: $120

Spring Tuesday league

Call for CedarSpiel committee members

Our 2024 CedarSpiel in August will be here before you know it!

If you want to be part of the planning process, email Kari Kozak (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). We want to get the ball rolling, so don't wait! This is a great opportunity for newer club members to see and help behind the scenes.

Get your team ready for Arena Nationals--or another national event

Were you inspired by how our men's team represented Cedar Rapids Curling and the Midwest Curling Association at the National Arena Curling Championships in Eveleth, Minn.? These events are great ways to get national championship experience and meet curlers from across the country.

And you don't have to be an experienced curler to try one of these. We've had VERY new curlers participate in these national events in the past.

There are four opportunities for Cedar Rapids Curling members to play in a national event: Club National Championships, Mixed National Championships, Arena National Championships, and 5-and-Under National Championships.

The MCA will host playdowns to choose the teams that will represent them. Dates have been set for two playdowns (Jan 26-28 for Club Nationals; Feb. 9-11 for Mixed Nationals). We expect dates for Arena and 5-and-under to be later in the spring.

If you are interested in playing in any of these playdowns, start talking to fellow members about putting together a team and perhaps signing up to play together in league in order to practice together. Once you have a team, let Phil Burian know at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Never gone to a bonspiel? What are you waiting for?

Bonspiel season is in full swing, and if you haven't gone to one, you're missing out. Bonspiels are a great way to try out dedicated ice, play several games over a weekend, meet curlers from across the country, and enjoy good food and drink.

And you don't need to be an experienced curler. Most bonspiels are pretty casual and just for fun. They offer a great way to get better at the sport.

Check out the bulletin boards on the ice house and the Facebook Warm Room for fliers for upcoming spiels. Talk to other members about their favorite spiels. Then put together a team and go!

Volunteer at upcoming Learn-to-Curl events

CRC adopts 'no-tick rule'

Cedar Rapids Curling will adopt the World Curling Federation's "no-tick rule" starting with our winter league. As more clubs and bonspiels begin to use this rule, we want our members to understand it and be ready to play with it.

We encourage skips to alert teammates to center guards so everyone is aware when the rule is in place, and to practice kind, friendly enforcement of the rule as we all get used to it.

No-tick rule

If, prior to the delivery of the sixth stone of an end, a delivered stone causes, either directly or indirectly, an opposition stone in the Free Guard Zone (FGZ) that is touching the center line to be moved to an off-center-line position, the non-offending team has the option to:

  • remove the delivered stone from play and replace all stones that were displaced to their positions prior to the violation taking place; OR
  • leave all stones where they came to rest.

If the stone is moved from the center line to an out-of-play position, the FGZ rule applies.

Examples:

1: Team Cale’s first stone comes to rest touching the center line in the free guard zone. Team Emily’s first stone then taps Team Cale’s stone off the center line, where it stays in play in the free guard zone. Team Cale can decide if they want to take Team Emily’s stone out of play and move their stone back to where it was on the center line OR leave everything as is.

2: Team Cale’s first stone comes to rest touching the center line in the free guard zone. Team Emily’s first stone then taps Team Cale’s stone off the center line and into the house. Team Cale can decide if they want to take Team Emily’s stone out of play and move their stone back to where it was on the center line OR leave everything as is. This is different from the free guard zone rule, in which a stone moved from the free guard zone to the house is allowed.

3. Team Cale’s first stone comes to rest touching the center line in the free guard zone. Team Emily’s first stone then taps Team Cale’s stone, but it remains touching the center line. No action is needed because it is still touching the center line.

4. Team Cale’s first stone comes to rest touching the center line in the free guard zone. Team Emily’s first stone hits Team Cale’s stone on the center line out of play completely. Because a guard was removed from play during the free guard zone rule, Team Cale’s stone is put back in place and Team Emily’s stone is removed from play.

5. Team Cale’s first stone comes to rest touching the center line in the free guard zone. Team Cale’s second stone taps their first stone off the center line. No action is needed because it was their own stone.

6: Team Cale’s first stone comes to rest touching the center line in the free guard zone. Team Emily’s third stone (the sixth overall stone played in the end) taps Team Cale’s first stone off the center line. Because this is the sixth stone, the no-tick rule is no longer in play and the game continues.

If you have any questions about this rule, please talk to a CRC board member.

Hello,

Cedar Rapids Curling wishes you all a very happy holiday season and a wonderful 2024. As CRC Board President Phil Burian always says, "YOU are why I curl!"

Because this is the sixth stone, the no-tick rule is no longer in play and the game continues.

If you have any questions about this rule, please talk to a CRC board member.

Hello,

We want to offer a huge congratulations to Greg Schmitt, Stephen Spence, Parker Abbott, and Cale Tesch for winning the bronze medal at the 2023 USA Curling Arena National Championships held Nov 9-12 in Eveleth, Minn.!

Team Tesch went 5-1 over the week, with both losses (one in pool play and one in the semifinals) to DFW Curling Club who went on to win the championship for the fourth consecutive year. They played great games that had us at home cheering while watching the livestreams.

We're just so proud of them! Fantastic curling, guys!

Save the date -- Dec. 15 -- to celebrate our team!

The Iowa Heartlanders will honor Cale, Parker, Stephen, and Greg's bronze medal by having the team drop the ceremonial puck at its Dec. 15 game at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

Mark your calendar to come cheer them on! We'll update everyone with additional information if and when we have it.

Do you want to look like a winner?

Do you like what our bronze medalists are wearing? Team Tesch worked with Dynasty Curling to design these great tops--and soon you can have your own.

We are working to set up an ordering process to reduce costs so sit tight and stay tuned!

Sign up for December pick-up games now

Fall league ends Dec. 5, but we do have the ice reserved for Dec. 12 if people would like to have a fun night of pick-up games or practice or whatever you want to do. Show up in your best holiday gear for extra fun!

Tips to speed up your game

Whether you're new to Cedar Rapids Curling or you've been around for awhile, everyone could always use a reminder about good curling etiquette, so the next few newsletters will focus on this area.

This month, let's talk a bit about keeping the game moving so everyone can get eight ends in every league night.

  • Rock ready: As soon as the opposing player has released their stone, the next player to throw should move quickly to the hack. Clean the stone and get set up so when your skip takes control of the house, you're ready to throw.
  • Help a teammate out: If your teammate has to get their slider on or you skip is coming down the ice, get the rock out for them while you're waiting.
  • Lead on: As the beginning of an end, if you do not have hammer, your lead should NOT help to put the rocks away. Instead, the lead should find their first rock, get in the hack, and be prepared to throw as soon as thie skip is at the other end.
  • Out of order: Rocks do NOT need to be put away in order. Simply putting the rocks neatly in the corners and not worrying about the number order saves a lot of time.
  • Stay focused: We want our games to be social and fun, but to also not constantly be put on pause while people finish a conversation. Save some of it for broomstacking!

Let Emily Nelson (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) know if there are curling things you want to learn more about in a future newsletter. It could be anything from tips on play, etiquette, or whatever is on your mind.

Calling all ladies for a fun spiel

The 75th annual USWCA National Bonspiel will be held Feb. 14-18, 2024, at the St. Paul Curling Club. It's been six years since this national women's bonspiel has been held in the Midwest, so it's a great time to try it if you haven't before.

  • 4-game guarantee
  • Wednesday evening kit party and opening ceremony
  • Thursday banquet and Friday dinner

Meet your Cedar Rapids Curling team competing at National Championships

Cale Tesch, Parker Abbott, Stephen Spence, and Greg Schmitt will compete Nov. 9-12 at the 2023 U.S. Arena National Championship in Eveleth, Minnesota. Wish them luck!

Hello,

Just a few more days until the first league of the 2023-2024 curling season kicks off! We can't wait for everything the next year will bring. We have a lot of updates, so please read through carefully. We'll see you on the ice soon!

Don't forget about new league times and broomstacking

Our fall 10-week league starts Tuesday, Sept. 19. To accomodate the arena, we have pushed the start of league back 15 minutes. We will now start at 6:45 p.m. and end at 9:15 p.m. To ensure we are off the ice on time, we ask that whatever end you are in at 9 p.m. be your last end.

One aspect of curling that is a large part of the sport is broomstacking. For those of you who may be newer, broomstacking is simply enjoying the company of your opponents after the game, usually with a cold beverage (but not required).

There are a number of Cedar Rapids Curling members who go to Union Station on 16th Avenue (two minutes from the arena) after league every week for food and drink.

We'd love to have some new faces join us and be able to get to know everyone better!

Ready to shop?

Cedar Rapids Curling has a temporary online shop set up with some great club clothing items (some old favorites and some new things).

The deadline to purchase items is Oct. 1.

Purchased items will be delivered to the arena during league in late October. Happy shopping!

Seeking membership development coordinator

Do you remember when you were new to Cedar Rapids Curling? Do you want to help new curlers move through learn-to-curl events to instructional leagues to full membership?

The Cedar Rapids Curling Board is looking for a membership development coordinator. You don't need to have curled for a long time. Newer curlers could be great for this. The role won't take up much of your time. We ask that you email  instructional league curlers before and after league to let them know what to expect and what they can do next to keep curling. You'll also be in charge of handing out our new member swag bags and letting them know about their membership perks!

If you have any questions or want to be considered, email Phil Burian (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or Kari Kozak (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Curling tip of the month

We are reviving an old newsletter feature. Let Emily Nelson (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) know if there are curling things you want to learn more about in a future newsletter. It could be anything from tips on play, etiquette, or whatever is on your mind.

Whether you're new to Cedar Rapids Curling or you've been around for awhile, everyone could always use a reminder about good curling etiquette, so the next few newsletters will focus on this area.

This month, let's talk a bit about sweeping.

  • Be ready to sweep your teammate’s rock as soon as it is released.
  • After sweeping, immediately return to the side of the sheet. Do not walk back in the middle of the sheet.
  • Sweepers should stand on the sidelines between the hog lines when not sweeping.
  • If your skip is throwing the next stone, prepare the stone for him or her.
  • Do not clean your broom over the sheet. Go well behind the hack or off the ice entirely.
