Newsletter - August 2021

Hello,

The 2021-22 curling season is here! Get ready for a busy year curling and spreading the good news about our favorite sport before, during, and after the Olympics!

A sincere welcome and thank you

Welcome Greg Schmitt and Byran Coster as the newest members of our Cedar Rapids Curling Board of Directors! We're so glad to have you on board to help us lead our club to new heights.

As the 2020-21 curling year comes to an end, we'd like to extend a sincere thank you to all members who paid their dues, especially when it wasn't certain we would even get to throw a single stone. We couldn't be more grateful and proud of our curling community. We continue to work toward our ultimate goal of a dedicated club, in which we plan to place a plaque recognizing all our dedicated members who kept us going during this dark and uncertain time.

Sign up for fall, winter, and spring curling

Curling will soon return to our normal Tuesday nights on our home Olympic ice side! Leagues will have two shifts similar to our pre-pandemic leagues.

Sign up now at https://cedarrapidscurling.com/index.php/calendar/event-listings

  • Sept. 7: Pick-up games
  • Sept 21-Dec. 7: 10-week fall league (There will be a two-week break Nov. 16 and Nov. 23 for members to travel to Olympic Trials in Omaha and for Thanksgiving. There may be pick-up games these two weeks.)
  • Jan. 11-Feb. 8: 5-week winter league
  • April 5-May 24: 8-week spring league

You also can sign up to volunteer at our Sept. 14 Learn to Curl. You don't have to be an expert curler to help at these events. We have lots of things for people to help with!

We'll have lots of volunteer opportunities over the year as we'll have multiple Learn to Curl Events and mini camp for brand-new curlers during our Olympic push rom Feb. 15 to March 29. There also may be potential for pick-up games during some of these events

Update on COVID-19 protocol

Cedar Rapids Curling continues to take direction regarding COVID-19 policies from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Linn County Public Health (LCPH) professionals. With the delta variant taking off around the country, the CDC recommends indoor masking in counties with “substantial” or “high” coronavirus transmission. Because Linn County currently has a high level of transmission, we will require masks during play for our upcoming fall league, instructional league, and Learn to Curl events until CDC and LCPH guidance changes. Normal curling rules will apply other than current masking requirements.

We will continue to monitor the situation and will make adjustments to our policies as necessary. We appreciate your understanding and willingness to keep our curling and wider community safe and healthy.

Important changes regarding CedarSpiel

Due to low sign-up, we've had to alter this year's CedarSpiel. Instead of the previously planned three-day bonspiel, we will now be hosting a two-day event Sept. 11-12. The cost will be $75/person or $300/team (to cover ice cost). There will be no food or drink included, but the ice arena concession stands will be open for purchases. The goal will be for everyone to play three to four games over the two days, depending on how many teams sign up.

The ice is going in

Ice will begin going in this week, which is exciting enough, but it turns out we don't have to paint it ourselves! The arena's insurance will pay to have it painted. Don't worry, a few of us will be on hand to make sure it's done right!

Get ready for a few updates to our sheets in the form of Cedar Rapids Curling in-ice logos!

Picnic celebration

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Member Meeting & Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 8. We had a great time catching up with everyone, enjoying good food, celebrating, and looking forward to everything the coming year has to offer.
