Newsletter - May 2021

Hello,

The end of our spring league is quickly coming to an end, and we couldn't be happier with how it has been going. Along with  great play and getting to (finally) see everyone again, to the best of our knowledge, our return to curling has been safe and free from coronavirus transmission—and that is largely due to your diligence to maintaining social distancing and good hygiene practices. We request that if you test positive for COVID-19, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic, to please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. in order to allow us to make people aware if they have potentially been exposed to the virus. This is voluntary and confidential.Thank you!

Arena update

If you've been at ImOn Ice Arena in the last few weeks, you'll have noticed from the outside that it once again has four walls and a roof! Workers have been pouring concrete for the ice this past week. They expect ice to go back in in early August and we'll be in touch about when we'll need volunteers to paint the ice.

We'll soon be discussing fall leagues and other events, and we'll let you know what's planned as soon as we know.

Board elections coming up

Six positions on the Cedar Rapids Board of Directors will be up for election this summer. We have not determined a date for this, but it's a great time to consider joining the board!

The Board of Directors is elected by the general membership to establish policies in order to accomplish Cedar Rapids Curling’s mission through appointed officers and committee chairs. The Board ordinarily meets once a month.

We are revamping the election process and details will be coming soon. But in the meantime, if you have any questions about what it means to be on the board, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

You can help make CedarSpiel a success

CedarSpiel is our biggest event of the year and there will be emails coming about how to volunteer, but if you want to help before it kicks off, we have a fun, easy way pitch in: Put together a raffle basket, or donate items or cash to make a basket.

We count on the raffle baskets to break even – and hopefully make money for the club – on this event. Scroll down to find the situation that best fits you:

I WANT TO PUT TOGETHER A BASKET: Email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to let us know what theme basket you’re planning to create. Baskets do not need to be expensive but should be appealing to a wide variety of attendees. Pro tip: Liquor and anything curling-related does well!

I DON’T HAVE A BASKET OR FUN CONTAINER TO PUT THINGS IN: No worries, we’ll find one for you. Just bring us the loot.

I HAVE AN EXTRA BASKET OR FUN CONTAINER LYING AROUND: Donate it! Email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and let us know.

I DON’T WANT TO PUT TOGETHER A BASKET BUT I HAVE AN ITEM TO DONATE: Great! We’ll take it. It could be booze or maybe something fun that your employer/family/friends/enemies donate. We’ll take these miscellaneous items and make baskets out of them. Email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.and let us know.

I DON’T WANT TO PUT TOGETHER A BASKET OR DONATE AN ITEM: No worries. You can still help by donating money. We’ll use it to buy items to fill baskets. Email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and let us know. NOTE: We saw a “cash salad” at a spiel and it was overflowing with tickets, so we’d love to give this a go if we get enough money donated. Or do it yourself or with a friend! Grab a reusable “salad” container and fill it with cash: bunch of $1s, few $5s, $10s and a couple $20s on top.

FOR ALL DONATIONS: We don’t need it now, but we’d love to know what you’re planning to help in our planning. We’ll pick it up wherever is convenient for you.

Need inspiration? Google raffle baskets or check Pinterest to find lots of fun ideas! Here were the top ticket-getting baskets from 2019:

  • Goldline broom and stone keepsake (Don’t think you need to buy and donate a broom! Debbie McCormick donated this. But if you want to donate a broom, we’ll take it!)
  • Moscow mule: copper mugs, Tito’s vodka, ginger beer
  • Iowa Bourbon: Cedar Ridge Iowa Bourbon whiskey, flask
  • Legoland: lego sets
  • Pot O’Luck: $249,777 in lottery tickets, chocolate coins
  • Spectator Essentials: Curling throw tie blanket, curling travel mug
  • Olympic dreams: Curling stone Olympic rings flag, good curling hat
  • Curl up: Fleece throw, “Smart curling” book, Barnes and Noble and Starbucks gift cards
  • Frontier spices: Assorted spices, tote bag

We can’t wait to see what you all come up with, and we’re excited to make this the best CedarSpiel yet!
