Newsletter - August 2025

Hello,

Welcome to the 2025-2026 season with Cedar Rapids Curling! We can't wait for everything the next year will bring. We have a lot of updates, so please read through carefully. We'll see you on the ice soon! Fall League registration closes next week, Sept 2nd!

Free night of curling to start the new season

If you haven't been on the ice since spring and are feeling a little rusty, we've got you covered. We will host a free night on the ice Sept. 9.

Before we open the ice for pick-up games or any practice drills, we'll take a few minutes to run through ice set-up and a "teach the teacher" lesson. We want all our volunteers on the same page as we head into a Winter Olympic season. Whether you have taught learn-to-curls in the past or want to teach new curlers, please join us. Think you're not a good enough curler to teach? Think again!

Join or renew your membership and sign up for league

The Cedar Rapids Curling year runs from September through August. We are asking everyone to register for 2025-26 membership through the website.

To play in leagues (other than instructional leagues), players must pay an annual membership fee, which covers insurance, USA Curling and Midwest Curling Association membership, use of club curling equipment, and general overhead.

In addition to league play, membership offers intraclub curling and social activities throughout the year. Members have opportunities to develop their curling skills and knowledge, socialize with our members and regional clubs through friendlies, and curl at fun social and competitive events around the country.

For more information about membership price and benefits, click here.

Our 10-week fall league will run from Sept. 16-Dec. 9 (off Nov. 25, two to three byes).

Our leagues are open format, meaning your team can be all male, female, or any combination. You can sign up for leagues as a team of four or as an individual, in which case we will group you with others. Most of our members regularly sign up as individuals. It gives you the chance to play with new people each league! Learn more.

We ask that you have completed an instructional league or have curled in the past before you sign up for our open leagues. Registration closes Sept 2nd!

Get your volunteer hours in during learn-to-curl events

As we did last year, we will not host one large learn-to-curl event in September. Instead, we will use one to two sheets during two to four nights of fall league to run smaller learn-to-curl events.

If your team is on a bye on one of the learn-to-curl nights or during instructional league, we ask that you discuss with your team if one or two of you would be willing to volunteer that night.

  • Learn to Curls (during league): Sept. 30, Oct. 14 (potentially Oct. 7 and Oct. 21 if there is interest)
  • Instructional league: Oct. 28–Nov. 18

We will host multiple large-scale learn-to-curl events in the winter to coincide with the Winter Olympics. And if we get the number of participants we have seen in the past during the Olympics, we will need all the volunteers we can get!

As was announced earlier this summer, the Cedar Rapids Curling Board decided that members who volunteer at six events during the upcoming 2025-26 season will be exempt from a league fee increase the following 2026-27 season.

To be counted as a volunteer at an event, you MUST sign up to volunteer on the website prior to the event. Some longer events will count as two events. We will indicate this on the sign-up page.

Join us for broomstacking

One aspect of curling that is a large part of the sport is broomstacking. For those of you who may be newer, broomstacking is simply enjoying the company of your opponents after the game, usually with a cold beverage (but not required).

There are a number of Cedar Rapids Curling members who go to Union Station on 16th Avenue (two minutes from the arena) after league every week for food and drink.

We'd love to have some new faces join us and be able to get to know everyone better!

Save the date for Curl Jam

We are hosting a fundraising event Oct. 3 for the Arc of East Central Iowa. Businesses will make a large donation to the Arc in order to enter teams for a short learn-to-curl followed by a minispiel with three two-end games.

This event was a huge success last year and it was a lot of fun.

Taking time off work is a big ask, but we have a sponsor for the ice rental, so 100% of the money raised will go to the Arc.

Also, maybe your employer wants to enter a team?

 2025-26 curling calendar

Note that with the Winter Olympics taking place, we will take a break mid-winter to host more Learn-to-Curl events than normal. We hope everyone will help out in sharing our sport with new enthusiasts.
