Hello,
CedarSpiel 2024 is canceled
Our CedarSpiel Planning Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel CedarSpiel 2024. We, unfortunately, do not currently have the number of teams--nor do we feel we can recruit enough in the next couple of weeks--to be able to cover our costs while still hosting the great event that we and others have come to expect of CedarSpiel.
While we are sad about this year, we hope to celebrate the return of CedarSpiel in 2025!
Vote now for your Board of Directors
Six two-year positions on the Cedar Rapids Curling Board of Directors are up for election by the general membership.
Current members should have received an email with a link to vote for Board members on Sunday, July 7.
Voting is anonymous and will remain open open until July 21. New members will be announced at the July 28 picnic (for more on that, see below).
CRC bylaw amendments proposed
Two Cedar Rapids Curling bylaw amendments will be submitted for a vote at the annual member meeting Sunday, July 28 (see below for more information about the picnic/meeting). The full text of the proposed bylaws can be found at the bottom of this email, but here is a summary of the two changes.
- The board will appoint the president rather than direct election by the members to increase consistency with traditional business practices and streamline the election process.
- The target month for elections will be moved to March so board members will be established in advance of the curling season for planning purposes.
Summer/fall events you don't want to miss
CEDAR RAPIDS CURLING PICNIC: Our Member Meeting & Picnic is scheduled for noon Sunday, July 28, at CRC President Phil Burian's home in the historic Brucemore district of Cedar Rapids. (Address will be sent before the date.) Cedar Rapids Curling will provide the hamburgers, brats, buns, and utensils. We ask that you bring an appetizer, side, dish, or dessert to share. After eating and catching up, we will have a short member meeting to share club status and plans and announce the new Board of Directors.
FARMERS' MARKET: Cedar Rapids Curling will have a booth at the Cedar Rapids Farmers Market on Saturday, Aug. 17. This will be a great time to hang out together and share our sport with our community outside the ice!
CURL JAM: We are hosting a fundraising event Sept. 27 for the Arc of East Central Iowa. Businesses will make a large donation to the Arc in order to enter teams for a short learn-to-curl followed by a minispiel with three two-end games. More info coming, but sign up now to volunteer!

Full text of bylaw amendments
The following by amendments are proposed for a vote at the 2024 annual member meeting:
II(7)(i): Regular Meetings. The Members shall have a regular annual meeting. Unless otherwise determined by the Board of Directors, the regular annual meeting of the Members shall be held in or close to June each year at such place as may be designated in the notice of such meeting, for the purpose of a presentation of the President’s report on activity of the Corporation, a presentation of the Treasurer’s report on the financial condition of the Corporation, and for the transaction of such other business as may come before the meeting.
III(3): Election and Terms of Office of Directors. Each Director’s term shall be two years. The Board of Directors should be evenly divided between even and odd years of elections with only half of the board up for election each year. The seats of Members whose terms are expiring shall be filled by Member vote each March and whose new term will commence in May of that year. All nominations must be presented to the Secretary before March prior to Member vote. A slate of every individual nominated for the Board then shall be presented to the Membership for a vote by online ballot. Directors whose terms are expiring may be nominated for additional consecutive terms. Each Director elected by the Membership shall hold office until the earlier of the duration of his or her term, or his or her death resignation, or removal from office.
V(2): Election and Term of Office. All Officers shall be appointed annually by the Board at the first meeting of the Board following a Director election. If any appointment is not made at such meeting, such appointment(s) shall be made as soon thereafter as may be convenient. Each Officer shall hold office until successors have been duly appointed or removed by the Board.
